How we tackle exterior work

We start with a survey, together with you. For each window frame we note what needs doing, from a light sanding to new wood in a sill. It all goes in the quote, so there are no surprises.

Then come sanding, filling, priming and two top coats. On listed buildings we use linseed oil paint where needed, otherwise an alkyd paint that stands up well to Dutch weather.

The season

We do exterior painting from April to October. Below 8 degrees or in the rain, paint doesn't dry properly and blisters later. If you book in spring, your turn usually comes in June.

Questions about exterior painting

How often should my window frames be painted?

On the sunny side (south and west) every five or six years; on the north side it often lasts eight. Don’t wait until the paint peels, because by then water has got into the wood.

How much VAT do I pay?

For homes older than two years, the labour is charged at 9% VAT instead of 21%. Paint and materials are at the standard rate. The quote shows them separately.

A quote per window frame, so we knew exactly what we were paying for. The scaffolding went up on Monday, everything was done by Friday.
